The Declining Value of College Degrees

Image
Introduction Not long ago, college degrees were the ultimate symbol of academic excellence and professional credibility. Degrees conferred status, opened doors to exclusive job markets, and earmarked people for certain salary levels. However, in today’s fast-evolving world, the value of degrees is increasingly being questioned. With the widespread availability of higher education and the changing dynamics of the job market, many are beginning to wonder: Is a college degree still worth it? The Golden Age A few years ago, degrees were hailed. They were a badge of honour and a beacon of elitism. Universities were fewer, access to formal education was limited, and graduates enjoyed near-automatic access to highly coveted job opportunities. In Ghana, for instance, intellectuals like Dr. J.B. Danquah, a lawyer and politician, were revered because of their education. Lost Glory: The Current State of College Degrees Today, degrees are widespread.  According to Statista data from 20...

Seeking Mentorship: The Unspoken Struggles of the Next Generation

Image
A cry for mentorship by the Younger Generation There is a growing demand for mentorship among young people—a deep craving to be guided, nurtured, and inspired by those who have successfully navigated the paths they now seek to follow. Many young individuals find themselves in a state of uncertainty, grappling with setbacks and challenges they do not fully understand. The fear of making the wrong choices or failing to realise their potential often leaves them feeling lost. Reflecting on a recent conversation with a friend and drawing from my personal journey—as well as the experiences of some of the personalities I admire—I felt compelled to address this growing call for mentorship. This piece explores the realities of mentorship, the expectations of young people, and the role successful individuals can play in shaping the next generation. The Reality: The Grind Behind the Glam During my visit to Legon campus yesterday, a friend confided in me that she wanted to be mentored by B...

What Matters The Most: The Honest Truth

What matters the most: the honest truth We live in a crazy world. Everything is moving so fast. Everyone seems to be in competition with what they do not even know or understand. Everyone is striving for greatness. Everyone wants to be in the limelight. Everyone is waiting to see what is the next biggest thing that makes the headlines. And yeah, we all want to be there. But wait. What matters the most? Is that all that is important?  In the world today, everyone wants to feel important. Every musician wants to have a hit song. Every team wants to win the world cup or some champions leagues or something of that sort. Parents are expecting their wards to be the best graduating student. Everyone is seeking to be at the top. So many people feel the pressure of trying to do things they are not, or trying to portray to be something else. People put out wrong figures to assume a certain public image. But the real question is, is that really what is important? Let us get into it! Wha...

The Villain Within

Dealing With The Villain Within  Generally, people are born with a positive outlook on life. They are born optimistic and hopeful that things will work out. They usually believe their parents are superheroes and can get everything done for them. That's a good thing. However, as the days go by, things happen which corrupts their positivity. Some accidents or harmful events occur, which create a thread of negative reactions, and which tend to affect them for the rest of their lives, if not controlled. I have cause to believe that aside people's natural traits, events which occur in their young age affects their mindset and psychological make up than any other factors. When they are unable to let go of these dangerous thought patterns, they become a worm that eat up good things from their minds and leave them with a negative perspective about life.  Think about a lady who was raped in her childhood. She'll probably grow up with the mentality that men are evil and opportunistic...

SELF

Self This is a very controversial topic, as many people have their definitions and their own opinions about the concept of self. However, let's try to figure something out by ourselves. Take a minute, think about it. What is self?  I'd say, self is the unique identity or nature of a person which is not influenced by the world out there. According to my definition, self is who a person is. His real nature when he finds himself in the company of himself. This might sound a little bizarre but that's it. In most cases, you're not yourself in the company of others, you're what the circumstances make you. That's my definition of self. What is yours? Let's delve deeper into what the concept of self is all about.  Self is basically seeing yourself in the reflection of your mind. Who are you? What are you made of? What can you do? What's unique about you?  More often than not, we have countless people living other people. They are not themselves. We find people...

What Happened to the Youth of This Generation?

What happened to the youth of this generation? A few decades ago, the youth grew up knowing only their immediate family and few friends within their circle of activities. They were raised based on family values which are passed on from generation to generation, values which were largely acceptable by society. Then boom, out of nowhere came the internet, the "ruler" of today's world. The internet which was originally intended to aid communication in the military lost its purpose, or "it was expanded", so they say. The internet in itself is not bad, but it has produced a generation of youth who are almost genius and a breed of youth carrying an "I know best" and an "I care less" attitude. What's the point here? Am I condemning the internet or the youth? Fortunately, I'm doing none of the above. I'm only creating awareness and trying to draw our minds back to the Akan adage which suggests that "a person walking on a straight pat...
